Why do people visit the cinema?

Blumler and Katz's Theory of Audience Gratification

Blumler and Katz suggest there are 4 reasons why people visit the cinema, represented in the Uses and Gratification model.

Uses and Gratification Model
  1. Diversion - to escape routine and for entertainment
  2. Socialisation - to discuss with others e.g. friends, family
  3. Surveillance - to find out information/ educate themselves
  4. Identification - to identify their life with that of the characters
British audiences may enjoy British social realism films because they can identify with the characters as the locations and behaviour is recognisable.

Our film will provide entertainment for the audiencea and also allow them to escape routine.
The main reason people will visit the cinema to watch our film is socialisation. Having watched the film they will be able to discuss it with friends and family. This is likely to happen as our target audience of males aged 15-30 will talk about the film with friends whilst at school/work or whilst socialising.
The audience will also visit the cinema to gain a perspective of the struggle some people go through everyday of their lives, trying to avoid a life of crime and gangs.
Many of the people watching the film will be able to identify themselves with the characters, especially 'Ryan' who is portrayed in a very positive light throughout the film.
